-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GENERAL AMCS GLOSSARY OF TERMINOLOGY the Advance Music Construction System SUBJECT General: Glossary of Terminology SUMMARY This part of the documentation aims to clarify any ambiguous or technical terms that may be used throughout the manual. DESCRIPTION This glossary is listed by use in a term and description format; Term Description --------------- -------------------------------------------------------- SYSTEM The complete package of a device and/or the firmware. FIRMWARE The interface and utility the user interacts with when producing music. DEVICE An external peripheral to the system, may relate to either the system platform hardware, a music instrument or a storage operator. POINTER The triangular actor on the interface moved using the mouse. It can also indicate when the system is busy with intensive processing. MOUSE Normally an adaption for directly translating hand movements into actions on the computer screen, but this can also refer to the touchpad which does nearly the same operation, using finger press instead. KEYBOARD The part of the device used for typing. CONTROLLER External tactile interface for operating the system. INDICATOR An icon that informs the state of a peripheral on the system, but cannot be pressed. SECTION A screen used to perform a main feature of the system. It is selected using the buttons on the Side Bar. SIDE BAR An array of buttons used to select a section and perform multiple functions, always located on the right hand side of the system interface. PANEL A floating array of buttons and information that can be summoned using the Side Bar panel button, if present the middle mouse button or the menu key on the keyboard, and is used for various functions in the current section. BUTTON An icon on the interface that can be pressed to perform a function. CURSOR A highlight to indicate the current position at which is being edited. MARKER A highlight to indicate a point in an area which then performs an action during play. VIRTUAL PIANO A graphical representation of a standard twelve key musical keyboard present in the Track Editor Function Panel. This allows for Cues to be entered at the related key note into the Track Editor matrix. CUE An entry on the Track Editor matrix. CUE POSITION The row at which an entry on the Track Editor matrix resides. CUE TRIGGER The instance of an instrument being initiated from an entry on the Track Editor matrix. TRACK The column in which cues are edited and processed. MATRIX A large grid of entry points. INSTRUMENT An entry created and edited in the Instrument Configuration and Instrument Editor to serve as a reference for the system to process either as MIDI, as internal audio or to intelligently trigger other entries. EFFECT An entry created and edited in the Instrument Configuration and Instrument Editor to perform live and automated manipulation of a reference instrument attributes and output. CHANNEL An indication of what path to which device or audio output an instrument should take. ROUTE The method the instrument should use to access a device or audio output mix group. PRESET A recallable configuration of the Track Levels in the Track Mixer. PLAYER A part of the system that functions in the background processing all information destined for the instruments to use. It is invoked with the Play Button toggle on the Side Bar or the Return key on the Keyboard. BAR This is normally an interval at every eight cue ticks. BEATS PER MINUTE The timing interval the Tempo is measured in. It is normally considered as at the start of each Bar. CUE TICK The time interval taken to process a cue entry on the Track Matrix by the Player. Is it normally considered an eighth of the current Tempo. GROUP In terms of filing this is also known as a directory or a folder. ITEM In terms of filing this is also known as an archive or a file. DECIMAL A common ten based counting system. HEXADECIMAL A sixteen based counting system commonly used in digital systems. NIBBLE The upper or lower half of a two digit hexadecimal notation. KILOBYTE One thousand and twenty four bytes. MEGABYTE One thousand and twenty four kilobytes. GIGABYTE One thousand and twenty four megabytes. HERTZ One cycle per second. KILOHERTZ One thousand cycles per second. MEGAHERTZ One million cycles per second. SD Secure Digital removable storage card. SDHC Secure Digital High Capacity removable storage card. FAT File Allocation Table removable storage filesystem. USB Universal Serial Bus peripheral communication guideline.
